Workers recall building New Haven Coliseum
NEW HAVEN — The arena was unsightly, poorly designed and a bear to put together, the builders recall.
But for Bob Fitch and the team of engineers whose cranes snapped the New Haven Coliseum together like 100-ton Lego blocks, it was a labor of love. Fitch spent the beginning of the 1970s behind the wheel of a crane, loader or excavator, toiling through 12-hour workdays, seven days a week, to get the Coliseum up.

Well the things I look back apon so fondly are the countless times I've seen "The Hottest Band in the Land" ... KISS at the Coliseum (not to mention the times I've waited out side outside the upper doors by the infamous escalators, with my ear to the doors listening to their sound check and the time I snuck in backstage to watch one, then was promptly escorted out). Another thing that sticks out is the list of bands that were spray painted on each step leading up to the parking garage, and the times I've skipped school and skateboarded down the spiral approach from the garage to street level! And of course the parties sleeping out (sometimes multiple nights) for our favorite bands and getting the tickets we deserved that morning unlike today with the Internet and credit cards. Oh yes I will miss and look back fondly on the Coliseum!
